Report on the 1st Chugoku and Shikoku Area Study Meeting

The first study meeting in the Chugoku-Shikoku area of the JANS Young Scientists' Association was held on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Purity Makibi in Okayama City. There were three attendees on the day, but participants came from a wide range of areas, including Shimane, Ehime, and Kochi prefectures. The theme was "Future Vision of Nursing Science in Chugoku and Shikoku Area Considered by Young Researchers," and after discussing each of the practical, educational, and research activities that have been undertaken thus far, the future direction of the Chugoku and Shikoku Area Study Group was discussed. As a result, the following were extracted as the core directions: (1) continue to analyze the future of Chugoku and Shikoku from multiple perspectives, (2) expand network members, (3) implement projects such as holding seminars for young researchers, and (4) conduct joint research on the issues facing this area. We intend to expand the network and deepen our activities in the future.

Report on the 2nd Kyushu Area Study Meeting

On Thursday, March 21, 2019, 11 young researchers from the Kyushu area gathered in Fukuoka City. Last year, the meeting was held as the 1st Study Group Meeting, but this time it was held as the "2nd Kyushu Area Study Group Meeting" in accordance with the unification of the national designation in the JANS Young Researchers' Group. The 2nd Study Session consisted of two parts. The first half consisted of research presentations by two people, and the second half consisted of group work by all participants. All participants were stimulated by the research presentations, which conveyed the presenters' enthusiasm for nursing research and practice. The group work focused on the themes of "what young researchers can do" and "requests to the nursing community," and each group was able to come up with concrete measures. After the meeting, a reception was held, and the atmosphere was friendly from start to finish, with a promise that next year's meeting will be held. We hope to continue this friendly atmosphere toward the third meeting.

Report on the 38th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Nursing Science "Young Networking Salon

Continuing from last year, the Young Network Salon held "Let's Create the Future of Nursing Together! -Considering Diverse Ways of Living and Working from the Perspective of Work-Life Balance" was held.
This year's theme was "Life-Work Balance," which was of particular interest among the three young people's trees established last year. In the salon, we also posted introductory messages from the 25 area coordinators who are leading the activities of the Young Men's Association. In addition, as a new experiment, we conducted a questionnaire via the Young Men's Association mailing list in advance and posted the results at the salon, soliciting opinions from the participants.

Report on the 5th Off-line Meeting of the JANS Young People's Group

Continuing on from last year, an "Off-line meeting for young people" was held after the first day of the Annual Meeting.
The number of participants was the largest ever, 51 people, which is the same number as the 3rd meeting, and although many of them were meeting each other for the first time, they had a lot of fun.
The second half of the year provided an opportunity to get together in the regional area and make friends to discuss research.

Report on the 1st Study Group Meeting in Kyushu Area

Aiming to revitalize the JANS Young Members' Society in each region, we held the first meeting in the Kyushu area on March 21, 2018, ahead of any other meeting in Japan. Unfortunately, it was cold and drizzling on the day of the meeting, and it was almost as cold as midwinter, which is hard to believe in March, but 10 members from across the organization gathered at a venue near Hakata Station, which is conveniently located for transportation. In the workshop, we discussed in a world café style on the themes of "problems in conducting research," "what individuals and organizations are doing to improve their research skills," "needs for young researchers' association," and "how young researchers can play an active role. Although there are various challenges in conducting research, we received new stimulation through exchanges beyond the scope of our organizations, and we reaffirmed the need to manage our time effectively and work proactively. The small size of this workshop allowed participants to interact closely with each other. Starting with these members, we hope to further expand our network in the future!

First "Pre-review Meeting" for exchange of opinions between area coordinators and young research promotion committee members

The Young Researchers Promotion Committee, together with the Area Coordinators who lead the activities of the JANS Young Researchers' Society, would like to create the groundwork for young researchers to be active in their respective areas. In the next fiscal year, we plan to hold a "meeting for exchange of opinions between area coordinators and young research promotion committee members" as a forum for promoting such activities. Toward this end, we held a "Preliminary Discussion Meeting" on March 10, 2018.
Eleven area coordinators and committee members participated in the review meeting, which was held in the form of a world café. The participants, who came from a variety of backgrounds such as university faculty, clinical nurses, and graduate students, frankly discussed the current situation and concerns of young researchers. They then spent the entire time discussing what the JANS Young Researchers' Society can do for them and the prospects for activities that make the most of its unique characteristics. The white sheets at each table were filled with diverse and unique ideas from the participants. From now on, these results will be used as the basis for new activities of the "JANS Young Scientists' Group!

Report on the 37th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Nursing Science "Young Networking Salon

Continuing from last year, the Young Network Salon "Let's Create the Future of Nursing Together! (Part 2)" was held as in the previous year. The purpose of this salon was to publicize the activities of the JANS Young Researchers' Network and to provide a forum for young researchers and practitioners to exchange information and interact with each other.
This year, we upgraded the content of last year's event with three young people's trees (sub-themes: 1) Hopes and Proposals for the Future, 2) Introduction of Research Activities, and 3) Work-Life Balance - How is Everyone Doing? My Ingenuity~) were set up. The "Young Researchers' Trees" set up in the passageway connecting the two wings of the venue caught the attention of many participants, who sent us many messages. Many of the young researchers who attended had never heard of the "Young Researchers' Group" before, and some said they did not know who or how to consult with regarding their research. We hope that the interactions at this salon will lead to a wider circle of information exchange and information sharing. In the future, we will organize the contents of the messages from the young researchers' trees in full bloom and disseminate them via our website and mailing list!

As a representative of young nursing researchers, Ms. Keiko Nagasaka, representative of NPO Pregnant Women's Life and director of NPO Fit for Mothers Japan, presented concrete examples of how to turn the seeds they are holding in their hands into action.

Holding of the 4th off-line meeting

This year, too, we held an "Off-line meeting for young people" after the first day of the Annual Meeting.
There were 39 participants (32 in the first session, 37 in the second session, and 51 in the third session), who belonged to all over Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa.
The dinner was in a standing style to facilitate interaction among participants, with tables determined by lot drawing at the beginning and an opportunity to gather in the regional area in the latter half of the meeting. Participants were also asked to self-promote their areas of expertise and outline their research activities on their name holders.
Participants enjoyed sharing information about their usual educational and research activities and discussing the future of nursing with great enthusiasm. Many participants expressed their hope that the conference would be held again in the next fiscal year.
The 5th offline meeting will be held on December 15, 2008 @ Ehime. We are looking forward to seeing many of you there!

For a small step by a young researcher to become a step for society

Contents

Ms. Eri Osawa, a member of the Committee for the Promotion of Young Researchers, talked about the basic process of formulating institutions and policies and the points to which researchers can contribute, and Dr. Mikako Arakita of International University of Health and Welfare, based on her past experience, presented a topic on the research development process and how the results are connected to institutions and policies. The participants were able to learn about the process of research development and how the results are linked to institutions and policies. The participants seemed to take the policy as something familiar to them.

Off-line meetings

The "off-line meeting," a project of the younger members' group, seems to be gaining recognition each time it is held, and was a great success with 51 participants (32 in the first meeting and 37 in the second meeting). Although the largest number of participants were from the Kanto area, there were also participants from San-in and Hokuriku areas, where the number of ML registrants is small. There were also 18 male participants, many of whom shared their everyday problems with other men. Some participants said that they usually only had opportunities to talk with people from the same university or area of study, but talking with people from other universities broadened their perspectives and helped them in their own activities after returning to their home countries.

Creating Human Care 20 Years from Now: Finding and Developing Seeds for Research! ~Research Seeds

Contents

The participants discussed the research skills and attitudes that young researchers can share in order to discover and nurture research seeds for imagining future human care, from the topics presented by young researchers in other academic fields. The topic providers were young researchers in different fields other than nursing, such as engineering and cultural anthropology, and the activities of young researchers in each field were also introduced, making the meeting a stimulating one.

Some of the opinions expressed at the exchange meeting
  • In response to a question about how to successfully connect with researchers in other fields when conducting interdisciplinary research and tips for doing so, the participants suggested that it is important to share information about each other's fields and to collaborate with each other while clarifying their respective roles.
  • I think we need role models who can provide and implement practices while holding university posts, such as research nurses and clinical professors in hospitals and practice institutions.
  • I would like the opportunity to communicate about my research.
Off-line meetings

After the end of the academic meeting on the first day, an off-line meeting of the young people's group was held.
The meeting was a great success with 34 participants. Self-introductions helped create connections among practitioners of common research themes and methods, and the exchange of information on research groups was a very productive time, with topics that could only be discussed at an off-site meeting.
We have decided to hold an off-line meeting at the time of the scientific meeting as one of the resources for young researchers to loosely connect with each other in the future.

Comments from the day's participants What to expect from the Young People's Group

(1) I still don't know the basics of research, and I am not confident. (2) Training programs related to research that can solve the problems of "I still don't know the basics of research" and "I can't ask now".

(2) Making friends with whom you can discuss your research

(3) Enhancement of information dissemination via ML

(4) I'd rather socialize offline.

(5) Expectations other than the above

  • building up a group of friends
  • I am not good at international exchange and would like to get information
  • I want to connect with people interested in fieldwork and group work, and organize workshops.

(6) Reason for participating in the offline meeting

  • Discovering Connections
  • Seeking Connection
  • Discussion of research
  • I wanted to talk to you about a lot of things.
  • Seeking new connections and expansion
  • Making friends to do research in the community
  • Consultation and companionship regarding research
  • We are far away and would like to take this opportunity to meet face to face.
  • It was fun. Everyone was working hard in a great place, so I thought I would work hard too.
