The Japan Academy of Nursing Science was established on July 25, 1981 (Showa 56) at its first general meeting for the purpose of promoting the development of nursing science, promoting the exchange of knowledge widely, and contributing to the health and welfare of people. It is based on the "Japan Council of Nursing Program Universities," which at that time consisted of six universities. At the time of its establishment, there were 185 regular members, but the number of members has steadily increased each year, and the society now has more than 9,000 members.
In September 1987, it became the first nursing-related academic society to be approved for registration with the Science Council of Japan. On January 30, 2007, it acquired the status of a limited liability intermediate corporation, and in accordance with the amendment of the law in December 2008, it acquired the status of a general incorporated association, and as of June 1, 2010, it was recognized as a public interest incorporated association and became the Japan Academy of Nursing Science.
The main projects of the Society are,
- Holding academic meetings
- Publication of academic journals, etc.
- Promotion of research activities
- Organizing JANS seminars
- Cooperation and collaboration with relevant domestic and international academic organizations
- Awards for research papers
- Promoting international research cooperation
- Social activities to contribute to people's health and well-being
- Other activities necessary to achieve the objectives of the Society
