The term profession, in its etymology, means one who has been "ordained (profess) of God. Thus, traditionally, professionals, like clergy, university professors, physicians, and lawyers, were those whose mission was to carry out God's will as agents of God's work. The professions as divine missions were transformed into modern professions based on empirical science and technology in modern society with the development of science and technology. And in modern times, the professions have high standards of competence and are responsible for maintaining and expanding their professional knowledge and skills, altruism,self-controlSex,human beingA professional is considered to be a person who performs a professional occupation based on values such as dignity as a person, professional ethics, and impartiality. In addition, the profession is a socially recognized profession whose first priority is to contribute to society with integrity based on professionalism, which is a clear professional responsibility.

The Japan Nurses Association's "Code of Ethics for Nurses" clearly states to society the scope of responsibility nurses undertake as professionals.
