Explanation of Terms

Coordination is often performed when nurses work within a multidisciplinary team (hereafter referred to as a "team") that includes patients and their families, and is an important term for providing the best possible medical care and care to patients and their families.
The general meaning of the term "coordination," according to Kojien, is "to combine harmoniously" or "to coordinate and bring things together," and includes the connotation of not only coordinating but also bringing things together.
In previous studies on coordination (Iioka, Oba, Hirota, et al., 2023; Okano, Ueno, Okawa, et al., 2018; Ohara, Kawai, Kuroda, et al. 2019; Ushiba, Hayashi, and Imura, 2022), coordination is a process that involves team members, namely patients (subjects), their families, inside and outside the hospital related professions, and with further institutions.
Coordination means that the nurse takes into account the patient's (subject's) and family's intentions, sets goals for the team members based on those intentions, and builds relationships within the team so that the team can work as one to provide the best possible medical care and care. It also means that the team should come up with solutions to problems and issues that arise in the course of these activities, and make arrangements so that the best agreed-upon measures can be taken.

nursingThe term "coordination" in the "Nursing Care and Health Care" section is an approach to create a convenient organizational structure to eliminate duplication and to efficiently utilize resources for the benefit of the target population and care providers (Glossary of the Japanese Society of Nursing Science). Coordination, on the other hand, is an approach to building relationships among team members and to adjusting the organizational system for the betterment of the system by helping the team members to think about and agree on solutions to issues and problems that arise for patients and their families. It is a term that has a broader meaning than "coordination.
