Research is a systematic inquiry conducted using the scientific method to answer a specific question or solve a problem, the purpose of which is to develop a body of knowledge for the advancement of scholarship and practice. For these efforts, by following a certain order (research process) and utilizing clear objectives, research frameworks, and methods, on the one hand, it attempts to elucidate relationships among things, and on the other hand, it attempts to construct or verify new theories.
There are several categories of research, which are generally classified as quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative research can be categorized as experimental, quasi-experimental, or nonexperimental research depending on the degree of control, or as quantitative descriptive or hypothesis testing research. Qualitative research includes phenomenological research, grounded theory, ethnographic research, historical (academic) research, and philosophical inquiry. Research classifications over time include cross-sectional and longitudinal (cohort) research, and classifications by research purpose and content include basic research, applied research, and action research. And for concepts and theories, deductive and inductive research classifications are used.
